Skills I'd take for a combat rifle build: Impact, Metal Storm, Assault, Defense, Quick Charge, Deploy, Supply Drop (1 or 2 points), Overload, Stat. The rest depends on how much ammo and health regen you want. The main thing to keep in mind with Roland is that the turret's damage will eventually suck because it doesn't scale well enough.

Your turrent will be deployable every 29 seconds, with a 20 second turrent life you only have 9 seconds between turrents. Every 7 seconds of cooldown gets reduced to 2seconds. 2/7 = 29/100. I want to get used to playing a build that's made for Co-Op and make sure that its good enough for others who are more experienced than I am. Only fought Crawmerax once. And by fought I mean died constantly while it gave enough distraction for a 69 Hunter to take him down.
